A drawing begins with a living form. It incubates into a creature; it seems to choose its own nature. A narrative evolves and then I pursue the thing through the woods. Chasing with lanterns, I grab the beast by the ears, pry its face into the light, and have a good look. Usually some ugly bits of this human existence peer back: greed, mental illness, lust. There is never a simple explanation; these drawings find a way to unpack difficult subjects.
My aim is to articulate the evil that many deny exist, some rationalize, others even seek.
I love working with graphite on paper; this is immediate, no prep, no fuss, I can be instinctual and spontaneous. At the same time, working in pencil is slow, allowing more time for what-nots and who’s-its to creep out of the woodwork.
Painting also plays a role for me, as color has power, but contrast is king. My paintings are really just drawings, my drawings are just stories, and I’m just a weirdo with a garage full of monsters.
I live in Northern California with my beautiful wife and kids. My teachers are Albrecht Durer, Kathe Kollwitz, Ralph Steadman, Todd Schorr, and many more. My most profound influence has been from this incredible living world and our amazing minds, all created by The Great Artist!
